Syracuse Airport Launches New Police Department

The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) has officially launched the SRAA Police Department to provide in-house law enforcement at Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR). This milestone follows a comprehensive review by Steven Baldwin Associates (SBA), which recommended transitioning away from reliance on the Syracuse Police Department to a dedicated airport authority model.

Legislation passed by New York State lawmakers enabled this change, making the SRAA Police Department the first new law enforcement agency formally established in the state in decades. The department officially began patrolling airport property on March 6, 2023.

Led by Chief Mark Werbeck, a 25-year veteran of the Syracuse Police Department, and Captain Anthony Sobiech, who served 28 years with SPD, the SRAA Police Department includes two full-time officers and 28 part-time officers.
